This variation of the vise can be used in a situation where a work piece needs to have a form machined lengthwise through the part. If the length is considerably larger than the
thickness and width (which is the case with many parts) this can create a situation where it becomes a problem to reliably hold the part. With this vise the part can rest against the large back surface, while it is contained between the jaws. The part can be taken out of the vise, dimensionally inspected, the appropriate changes made to the machine location, and placed back in the vise for finish machining. A stop placed against the bottom surface of the movable and solid jaws will insure repeatability in the "Z" axis. This is necessary when machining tapers in order to maintain the program plane. |
